Decent Sampler

A free player on macOS, Windows and iOS.

What you get

A .dspreset file and the WAV files it maps, in one folder.

Kit Name/
  Kit Name.dspreset
  Kick 01.wav
  Snare 03.wav
  ...

Like SFZ, the .dspreset is text, in this case XML. The sample references are relative to the preset, so the folder moves as a unit.

Where it goes

Decent Sampler loads a preset from anywhere on disk, so you can keep the folder wherever your libraries live and open it from the plugin. It also scans a preset folder that you set inside the plugin's own preferences, and putting the folder there is what makes the instrument appear in the browser rather than having to be opened by hand each time.

Why this format is worth having

Decent Sampler is free and runs on macOS, Windows and iOS. If you want to hand an instrument to someone else, this is the export that costs them nothing to open, which makes it the practical choice for sharing a kit rather than keeping one.

The format itself

This guide covers getting the file onto your sampler. For what is actually inside a .dspreset, what else reads it and where its limits are, see the Decent Sampler preset format.
