Check a file you already have Drop an.xpm, .exs, .sfz, .dspreset, .X7L, .wav or .aif into the file inspector and it reports what is inside. It runs in your browser and uploads nothing.
Instrument formats
These hold the mapping rather than the audio. They say which sample plays on which key, and point at the audio files that do the playing.

Audio formats
The files the instrument formats point at. They carry the audio, and if you are lucky the root note and the loop points as well.
Hardware samplers
Some samplers have no instrument format at all. They read plain WAV, so the whole job is landing the audio at the sample rate, bit depth and channel count the machine expects. These pages say what that is for each one.
